Barcelona is a DS106 city (howto)
Friday, February 24th, 2012in this post I’ll try to explain how I did create this map, hope it serves as a tutorial for somebody else!
but first, some boring background about street numbers in Barcelona: traditionally, each house/building is consecutivelly numbered starting from 1, odd numbers in one side of the street and even numbers in the other; numbers are clearly visible near the door of each house/building; sometimes numbers are grouped, like 104-108, so it is possible to “miss” a number
what I did was going to Barcelona’s open data archive (openDataBCN) where it is possible to find a list of all the buildings of the city (huge, 154393 listed) as well as a list of all the streets in Barcelona (there are 5449 streets in Barcelona city); the first file contains, for each building, its street number in form XXX-XXX, so I applied a filter to retrieve only those pairs 106-XXX, XXX-106 or, obviously, 106-106 (remember that our goal is to visualize all the 106 street numbers in Barcelona); joining both files by street code it is possible to obtain a list of streets containing a 106 number; this was done using processing (I’m learning processing so any excuse to use it is welcomed) but the easiest way to do it would be using google refine, I think; the result, 321 allegedly streets with a 106 number
then, I went to google maps and I created a map, placing manually (yes, it was a tedious process (double parenthesis, did you notice “a tedious” has the five vowels in order?)) each marker by searching each street name plus 106 plus Barcelona; I need to figure out how to automatize this but it needs to be manually checked because sometimes google maps says “the position in the map is approximate”, meaning that there is no really a 106 number in that street; using street view it is possible (with some patience) to determine that such statement is true, so immediately one thinks that the quality of open data provided by the Barcelona government is not that accurate…
once I removed those streets where I have no doubt there is no a 106 street number (although there might still be a few of them in the final list), I exported the map as a KML file, which contains all the positions (latitude, longitude) of all the 284 street numbers containing a 106 in Barcelona
then, the second part is installing a KML viewer plugin for WordPress (just go to Plugins in your WordPress Dashboard, Add New and search for KML); I tested several of them, among others: OSM, Leaflet Map Maker, Google Maps GPX Viewer and WP Flexible Map; only the last one was able to visualize the KML file as a layer on top of a Google map, I don’t know why but I was unable to do it with the others
anyway, once you’ve installed the plugin and activated it, to visualize such a map you just need to create a new blog post containing a single line like this (remove the initial *) and, of course, upload the KML file to your blog:
[*flexiblemap width="500" height="400" src="http://procsilas.net/wp-content/uploads/DS106.kml" zoom="12"]
and that’s all folks!!! crazy? you’re completely right!!!
next: taking a picture of every 106 street number in Barcelona and creating a nice walk for those of you interested in having a different walk through Barcelona streets…
before next: yes, I know, I need to add some screenshots to this tutorial
UPDATE: original files containing buildings and street names can be found here and here (source: OpenDataBCN); these files are joined to produce a list of addresses with a 106 number using this processing code
Barcelona is a DS106 city
Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012here you have all the 106 street numbers in Barcelona city, 284 so far; next step is taking a picture of each of them…
it is an example of a “visualization assignment” I created for the DS106 course:

in a second blog post I’ll try to explain how I created this map and how I embedded it into a WordPress post
