In LA back in 1992 or 1993 I saw "I Only Want You To Love Me" in the Theaters and it was my first encounter with him (pretty rare given it was a TV movie) but I went on to the trilogy of The Marriage of maria Braun, Lola, and Veronika Voss and that may be the best Trilogy ever. He's a genius! What I like about the description of this one is it sounds very Bunuel, but not even Fassbinder can do Bunuel like Bunuel---there is another discussion in how awesome he is.
